USING REMOTE SENSING TO EXAMINE THE RATE OF URBANIZATION IN ACCRA, GHANA: A CASE STUDY OF GA EAST, WEST, CENTRAL AND SOUTH MUNICIPAL
Recent applications of the use of Remote Sensing (RS) techniques have gained prominence among researchers particularly geo-scientist. The main aim of the paper is to explore a remote sensing methodological approach to examine changes in land cover and land use activities of the periods of 1986, 1991, 2006 and 2016. The RS methodology employed include processing of images; radiometric and geometric corrections, image enhancement and supervised classification. The period of change in land use and land cover showed that in 1986, 8% of the total landmark were open areas, built-up areas also occupied 8%, dense vegetation covered 57%, and 8% were covered with water bodies. In 1991, built-up areas increased by 13%, open vegetation increased from 19% in 1986 to 34%. In 2006, major change were that settlement increased from 14% in 1991 to 36%, shrubs and grassland also decreased from 26% to 19%. In 2016, there was 60% increase in settlement. Based on challenges of applying the RS techniques the study recommended that, efforts should be made to make remote sensing data available for use by organisations and also there is the need for advancement in the use of the tool in capturing data.
